Western Australian barramundi could soon be a more common feature on international menus after a Singaporean fish producer announced major expansion plans for its Kimberley fish farm.

Barramundi Group (previously known as Barramundi Asia) has announced plans to expand its Australian barramundi operation to a capacity of 30,000 metric tons, with a capital spend of around AUD 350 million (€232.5 million / $245.3 million).

AT the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, closed borders fuelled fears of a food shortage that sparked panic-buying at supermarkets in Singapore and around the world. The disruption to food supply chains also caused worry about runaway food prices due to inflation.

Singapore-based Barramundi Group has put into operation its recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) facility in Brunei.

The firm saw progress across a number of its infrastructure and expansion projects during Q3, including a key milestone in the form of the completion of its Brunei hatchery.

Barramundi Group – which has operations in Singapore, Austrlai and Brunei – is on track to more than triple its production and harvest 7,000 tonnes of fish a year by 2026, according to today’s Q3 business update.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has confirmed that the island state saw a decrease in local production of seafood as the pandemic suppressed sales. A Spokesperson for the SFA told The Straits Times that farms lowered their output to keep pace with decreased sales demand during lockdown.
